  1. NAME
  2. ----
  3. autojump - a faster way to navigate your filesystem
  4. DESCRIPTION
  5. -----------
  6. autojump is a faster way to navigate your filesystem. It works by
  7. maintaining a database of the directories you use the most from the
  8. command line.
  9. *Directories must be visited first before they can be jumped to.*
  10. USAGE
  11. -----
  12. `j` is a convenience wrapper function around `autojump`. Any option that
  13. can be used with `autojump` can be used with `j` and vice versa.
  14. - Jump To A Directory That Contains `foo`:
  15. j foo
  16. - Jump To A Child Directory
  17. Sometimes it's convenient to jump to a child directory
  18. (sub-directory of current directory) rather than typing out the full
  19. name.
  20. jc bar
  21. - Open File Manager To Directories (instead of jumping):
  22. Instead of jumping to a directory, you can open a file explorer
  23. window (Mac Finder, Windows Explorer, GNOME Nautilus, etc.) to the
  24. directory instead.

  26. Opening a file manager to a child directory is also supported.

  28. - Using Multiple Arguments:
  29. Let's assume the following database:
  30. 30 /home/user/mail/inbox
  31. 10 /home/user/work/inbox
  32. `j in` would jump into /home/user/mail/inbox as the higher weighted
  33. entry. However you can pass multiple arguments to autojump to prefer
  34. a different entry. In the above example, `j w in` would then change
  35. directory to /home/user/work/inbox.
  36. For more options refer to help:
  37. autojump --help
  38. INSTALLATION
  39. ------------
  40. ### REQUIREMENTS
  41. - Python v2.6+
  42. - Bash v4.0+, zsh, or fish
  43. ### AUTOMATIC
  44. #### Linux
  45. autojump is included in the following distro repositories, please use
  46. relevant package management utilities to install (e.g. yum, apt-get,
  47. etc):
  48. - Debian testing/unstable, Ubuntu, Linux Mint
  49. All Debian-derived distros require manual activation for policy
  50. reasons, please see `/usr/share/doc/autojump/README.Debian`.
  51. - RedHat, Fedora, CentOS
  52. - ArchLinux
  53. - Gentoo
  54. - Frugalware
  55. - Slackware
  56. #### OS X
  57. Homebrew is the recommended installation method for Mac OS X:
  58. brew install autojump
  59. MacPorts also available:
  60. port install autojump
  61. ### MANUAL
  62. Grab a copy of autojump:
  63. git clone git://github.com/joelthelion/autojump.git
  64. Run the installation script and follow on screen instructions.
  65. cd autojump
  66. ./install.py or ./uinstall.py
  67. KNOWN ISSUES
  68. ------------
  69. - autojump does not support directories that begin with `-`.
  70. - For bash users, autojump keeps track of directories by modifying
  71. `$PROMPT_COMMAND`. Do not overwrite `$PROMPT_COMMAND`:
  72. export PROMPT_COMMAND="history -a"
  73. Instead append to the end of the existing $PROMPT\_COMMAND:
  74. export PROMPT_COMMAND="${PROMPT_COMMAND:+$PROMPT_COMMAND ;} history -a"
